The Pets

» Alex

Alex is the Manning dog. He’s named after the TV dog that poured beer for his master. His hobby is eating ham sandwiches. Alex is mostly border collie, and he likes nothing better than to herd all the people in the house into one room.

» Loki

Loki is the newest member of our family. She was named by CJ and his girlfriend after the Superlocrian Scale (a music thing). She was a stray cat in our neighborhood who adopted us. She’s since made herself quite at home in our house, and rules the roost with an iron paw. Her favorite game is to open the bottom drawers of my dresser, pull out whatever happens to be in them, and proceed to strew it throughout the rest of the house.

» Rusty

Rusty was a pomeranian-papillion mix (we think) that we adopted in the summer of 1998. She was our good friend, and she used to protect us from people who would ring our doorbell. Sadly, we had to put Rusty down in June 2007 after she began suffering from major seizures. She is very, very missed.

» Butterfield & Minnie

Minnie and Newt

Butterfield and Minnie were the two Manning cats for many many years. Butterfield, whose mother was (believe it or not) a purebred Siamese, was a 26-lb. monster whose nicknames ranged from “Butterball” to “Meatloaf” to “Bulldozer.” In all seriousness, though, he was a great cat: very loving, very attentive. Not at all like your typical aloof housecat.

Minnie (named after the baseball player, Minnie Minosa) was your more typical alooof housecat. She wasn’t all that interested in anyone or anything, and would only sit in someone’s lap when there were sports on TV (I guess she was aptly named).

Butterfield passed away in the spring of 2001, and Minnie followed suit a year later. Both were loved, and both are missed.
